LEONIDS 2001

The Leonids 2001 was the best meteor shower I have ever seen.  One could see about 6-15 meteors per minute even in our very light polluted and hazy sky!  Meteors were coming in pairs and even 4 at a time!

Most of the bright meteors will long tails were appearing overhead and both north and south!  While a lot of meteors were appearing close of the sickle of Leo. These meteors tend to be short bursts but most of these were faint!

To photograph the meteors, I loaded my camera on my Vista Star Tracker.  I used my FM2 with a 24mm f/2.8 lens and a Kodak Ektapress PJM Multispeed film.  Exposure times are between 5-6 minutes.  These pictures were taken around the time of the 2nd and 3rd peak (1:10am - 2:45am local Philippine Time or 19:10-20:45 UT).

I made about 15 shots in all but only about 5 frames had meteor in them including the picture on the right which has two meteors.   These are the best pictures of the batch.  Sadly, the haze from some clouds are visible in these shots.
